WIND CHIMES

for Commune Design

Made from local trees with grounding sonorous harmonies. These chimes are tall and architectural. They have a warm sound that converts breezy days into endless melodies. Alex Ross of the New Yorker calls them “surprisingly complex.”

Tuned by ear to harmonies found in Appalachian folks instruments, traditional intonations from North Indian classical music, and tones that call and catch attention.

Gratitude and thanks to Angel City Lumber in Los Angeles and Evan Shively / Arborica in Marshall, CA who supply the wood for these works.

The first windchimes were developed for Wild Up and their celebrated pandemic festival. GOOD VIBES abounded - all held at a distance while Odeya Nini sang in people’s driveways and I delievered wind chimes door to door. Poetry and bird song. Sweet hearts circling the city. The work is named after the BOSS and his epic double album THE RIVER that speculates on the death of the american dream - the dissolution of american youth - and the prospect of love found and lost and found again. Or as Bruce speaks to the pandemic seculsion from mid-80’s glory days: Alone, buddy, there ain't no peace of mind

Earlier developments with tuned tubular chimes include this large set with steel sculptures exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2016. The tuning system for these chimes were 3-Limit Pythagorean.
