Created with Zoe Aja Moore
Opera Four Hands (for Nam June Paik) is a live collage for two performers, transparencies, and a light box. Inspired by Paik’s mixing and re-mixing of images in 80’s video streams, the artists set out to create a new opera using an iterative process with improvised lo-fi techniques, and found audio/visual materials.
During the pandemic, Moore and Kallmyer began a dialogue about the design of new contexts for theater, music, and the performing arts. Their work together is indebted to Paik’s holistic performance practice, experimental processes, and immersive live events.
Inspired by Nam June Paik’s transnational art practice and experimentations in global satellite broadcast — as well as the present impact of the pandemic on remote communication — Afterlude/Prelude: Artists Respond to Nam June Paik brings together contemporary artists from around the world via webcast. Hosted by artist Julia Scher and SFMOMA Curator of Media Arts Rudolf Frieling, the multiple-hour presentation will feature over twenty artists responding to Paik’s thinking and writing through readings, performances, music, video, and more.
