Little William Theater

Conceived in collaboration with Mark Allen.

Throughout Machine Project’s one year residency at the Hammer Museum, weekly micro-concerts and other brief performances took place in a small coatroom closet – dubbed the Little William Theater – under the stairs in the Hammer Museum lobby. Performances were of live music, but there was also a puppet show, a cheese tasting, a bilingual poetry reading, and other sundry events. Pieces were typically one to two minutes long and were performed for two guests at a time.

Aside from weekly programming, The Little William Theater organized its own  Festival of New Music which comprised four resident ensembles, 95 composers, 350+ new works – all commissioned for the festival and under two minutes in length. Works are available by request. For more information, check out the Machine Project page for the Little William Theater, here.

Two tubas play experimental music for a small audience during the Little William Theater Festival of New Music.

Poets, Joshua Beckman and Anthony McCann read Carlos Oquendo de Amat’s seminal work of graphic poetry, Five Meters of Poems in Spanish and English to an audience of two.

DanRae Wilson and Miriam Jones create brief puppet shows exploring the ephemeral, transitory nature of a time-based event juxtaposed with the hearty tradition of vaudeville style puppetry a la Punch and Judy.
